A Friendship Blessing

May you be blessed with good friends.
May you learn to be a good friend to yourself.
May you be able to journey to that place in your

soul where there is great love,
warmth, feeling, and forgiveness.
May this change you.
May it transfigure that which is negative,
distant, or cold in you.
May you be brought in to the real passion,
kinship, and affinity of belonging.
May you treasure your friends.
May you be good to them and may you be there
for them;
May they bring you all the blessings, challenges,
truth,
and light that you need for your journey.
May you never be isolated.
May you always be in the gentle nest of
belonging with your anam cara.

Monday Morning Moon

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day I am sharing this beautiful blessing written by the great Irish poet, John O’Donohue, (1 January 1956 – 4 January 2008) who left the physical world way too soon, but continues to open people’s hearts and stir their souls with his beautiful words.  Anam Cara is Gaelic for ‘soul friend’.  I hope that each and every one of you who is reading this has at least one anam cara in your life and “may you  always be in the gentle nest of belonging with your anam cara.”

Practice Contentment

DSC01386

When you are discontent, your always want
more, more, more.   Your desire can never be
satisfied.  But when you
practice contentment,
you can say to yourself,  Oh yes -
I already have everything I need.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Perspective

DSC01422When you wake up every day, you have
two choices.  You can either be positive
or negative; an optimist or a
pessimist.
I choose to be an optimist.  It’s all
a matter of perspective.

~Harvey Mackay~

IMG_3132I believe everyone should have a broad
picture of how the universe operates and
our place in it.  It is a basic human desire.
And it also puts our worries into perspective.

Expect Surprise

Saturday Morning

Saturday Morning

Each day holds a surprise.  But only if we can
expect it can we see, hear, or feel it when it
comes to us.  Let’s not be afraid to receive each
day’s surprise, whether it comes to us as
sorrow or as joy it will open a new place
in our hearts, a place where we can welcome
new friends and celebrate more fully
our shared humanity.

Every day is a surprise.  There are
conformations of an interconnectivity
and synchronicity which inspire,
titillate and confirm the inherent
comedy of the universe.

Fulfilling Our Purpose for Being

DSC01337What is the nature of that place
where our original self is one
with its longing to explore
its own deepest possibilities,
and where discovering
the treasures waiting there
is the same as fulfilling
our purpose for being.

The true harvest of my daily life

Free to Fly

Jane, Carol and me in NYC, October, 2013

Friends – Jane, Carol and me in NYC, October, 2013

I BOW TO IT ALL

I keep telling strangers that
to be in the presence of those
with whom  you can both share
pain and just celebrate waking
is the answer to loneliness.

Such friendship makes the sharing
of pizza in a noisy pub and the
standing in silence as the old oak
creeks all that one could ask for.

In truth, this process of being
worn to only what is raw
and essential never ends.

It’s as if a great bird lives inside
the stone of our days and since
no sculptor can free it, it has to
wait for the elements to wear us
down until it’s free to fly.

Where would we be in this “process of being worn to only what is raw and essential” without our friends?  Carol and Jane have been friends since they were 12 years old, and since we were in NYC celebrating their 60th birthdays, that is  48 years!  Carol and I have been friends for 38 years, so added together that is a whopping 86 years of friendship, and that doesn’t include the years of my friendship with Jane.  It is through friendships like these that we get a glimpse of who we really are, and over time, what isn’t essential wears away until we are free to fly.

These photos were pilfered from an email Carol sent me the other day, which was serendipitous because this poem was sitting in draft form on my dashboard waiting for completion.  Thanks Carol.
